Weekend Update - Florida Layout February 10, 2019

Greetings followers of the Atlantic Pacific Railroad and my blog.

We're heading back north later this week and I wanted to make sure the lower level industries and yard would be designed and if possible, put in place. I've gone back and forth with a number of track plans, track and cork in place, only to rip it up. After sending some pics to some trusted souls, I think I got all of the mishegoss out of my system and the layout! So here we go....

The yard was the biggest challenge as to how to maximize the space to the yard tracks. After taking out a set of crossovers at the entrance to the yard, I tried a WYE switch, made by Atlas. Thing is that once you add the short curve track and some short straight track, you lose space. I don't have a 3 way switch and the one that works with code 100 is one made by Peco and they are not cheap! The next best thing was to use some #4 switches and other than a 3-way switch, it looks more prototypical. Here's the result...

This came out better than I anticipated. For a more detailed look, a video with some additional comments:

If I have some time, I'll start adding drops to the tracks for power. The yard will be on a 'district' with its own circuit breaker, the helix will have its own breakers and the middle of the lower level will have its own breaker as well.

Thanks for reading!

  1. It's great to see something run! With the districts, do you have a separate master bus that feeds the individual districts?

  2. That's a good looking yard throat. #4's do save a lot of space. And good 'finger' space too! There's a 3 way on the BRR. My Dad paid about $60. or $70. unpowered, from Sattlers, 20 years ago. Looks like your southern division is off to a good start!

  6. Great work on the yard throat and getting all the tracks in place. Everything looks neat and prototypical. The Mets boxcar kind of stole the show though!😁
