P.C.C.M. #88 Part 2 - Inbound Trains To Rock Ridge Yard

Welcome back to the continuation of the inbound part of P.C.C.M. #88. This is a three layout move with Sir John's N.Y.C.T.L. and PC Ralph's K.P.D. railroads. John and Ralph's trains are outbound only to my railroad.

Two trains from the N.Y.C.T.L. have departed Weehawken for Rock Ridge Yard. More trains are on the way! Let's see what is on the agenda for today....

Overnight the K.P.D. sent a string of cement hoppers to Weehawken for delivery to County Concrete. The AP crew picked up the cars and will take it to Rock Ridge. Those cars will be handed off to the crew of the M&E who service County Concrete...

Six covered hoppers from Tri- Mount Cement on the K.P.D. are sitting on Weehawken Track 2. There will be a crew change with an AP crew taking the reigns...

AP GP38-2 #302 will take the train to Rock Ridge East Yard and hand it off the M&E crew. In turn, they will switch it with County Concrete on an 'as need' basis...

EB Engine #8163 is on duty pulling off the PC caboose and adding an AP caboose to the train. The engine and caboose will be serviced and readied for its next assignment...

The PC caboose is pulled away from the train...

...And stored on the north end of Weehawken Yard...

PC #3007 is on the siding in Weehawken along with her sister engines that came from Terminal Yard...

AP #302 hooks up and backs on to the train...

The caboose is added to the end and heads out to Rock Ridge.....

Let's watch AP Train WRE-3 depart Weehawken for Rock Ridge...

Meanwhile, both AP trains that left Weehawken have been sitting at West Harold awaiting departure...

AP Train WRCP-1, the 'Reefer Train' gets priority to head into Rock Ridge Yard...

Let's see the 'Reefer Train' head to Rock Ridge Yard...

AP Train WRCP-1 Arriving in Rock Ridge Yard....

Back over at West Harold, AP Train WR-5 is getting ready to depart for Rock Ridge Yard. AP Train WR-3 has arrived at West Harold Interlocking....

The AP manifest train has the approach to signal and will head over to Rock Ridge...

AP WR-5 is at the Rock Ridge Yard Limits. He's going into the yard from the north end....

AP WR-5 is at the Rock Ridge Yard Limits. He's going into the yard from the north end....

The signal is up....

And they head into Rock Ridge Yard, holding at CP East. They stop and check in with the yard crew. They do take notice of the new yard office. Upper management needed another caboose and reactivated Caboose AP50 for revenue service after a few years...

Both trains are now in the yard. While it looks like a traffic jam at Rock Ridge, this will be handled with ease by the yard crew. 1:87 Scale NJ John will oversee the classification of these trains. AP Train WRCP-1 will get a crew change and then head out to drop the entire set of reefer cars over at C&P Restaurant Supply...

AP Train WRE-3 is next up to approach Little Jamaica and Rock Ridge Yard East. They'll hand off the cement cars to the M&E and then head out..

The approach and crossover to the AP/PC Main line tracks which in turn will head off to the M&E engines at Rock Ridge East Yard....

M&E C424's #18 & #19 are ready to pull the cars...

They pull the train, including the caboose...

...And shove the cars to track 1 in Rock Ridge East Yard...

They give the caboose back to AP 302..

The M&E crew is tied down for the day...

And the AP crew pulls around to hit that famous diner on the A.P.R.R. -  Meet At Ralph's! The AP crews favorite diner. No one has called out sick after eating there, so the food must be good!!

We'll cut it here for today. Tomorrow we'll have the freight head out, plus we have another train coming to Rock Ridge Yard!

Don't forget to check out Sir John's N.Y.C.T.L. and PC Ralph's K.P.D. railroads!!

P.C.C.M. #88 Part 1 on the A.P.R.R. - Inbound trains to Weehawken

Hello everyone and it's good to be back to participate in our Penn Central Car Movements! For those of you who may not know, I took the railroad out of commission to enhance the signals on my layout. The details of what was upgraded can be read about it HERE.

This is an inbound P.C.C.M. with trains coming from Sir John's N.Y.C.T.L. Railroad and PC Ralph's K.P.D. Railroad.

The N.Y.C.T.L. dispatched from Terminal Yard via Selkirk to Weehawken two trains. The first train is PC Extra 3180, a string of reefer cars with a final destination of C&P Restaurant Supply on the A.P.R.R. This train will change engines and crews and depart for Rock Ridge Yard. The second train is PC Extra 3175, a manifest train which will have an A.P.R.R. crew take the train to the yard. That train will be sorted in Rock Ridge Freight Yard, and delivered to its consignees. Extra 3180 arrived yesterday and Extra 3175 arrived this afternoon...

Here's both PC Extra 3180 and PC Extra 3175 in Weehawken Yard

There needs to be a change at Weehawken. AP engines GP38-2  303 and 304 are at the ready. The PC engines and their crews will go back to Terminal Yard after engine servicing and crew rest.

Empire Belt Engine #8163 is called in to swap out the PC cabooses from both trains and add AP cabooses in its place.

We see the pair of cabooses that will be added. What do we see here? A caboose that hasn't been in service for a while is now back in revenue service! AP #50 is back!!

AP Caboose #50 will be added to the train 3180 and AP Caboose #54 will be added to train 3175

The cabooses are pulled from both trains..

EB 8163 drops them off at the west end of Weehawken...

And now the AP cabooses are added to the outbound trains..

EB #8163 has completed its move and back in the west end of the yard...

Now for the engine swap. AP #303 will take the reefers up to Rock Ridge and then on to C&P Restaurant Supply.  AP #304 will take its train to Rock Ridge once #303 departs...

The PC engines are moved on adjacent tracks...

...And the AP engines are now on the front of each train...

As we see the trains are ready to depart,  AP #303 will head out as AP Train WRCP-1 to C&P Restaurant supply via Rock Ridge. AP #304 will head out to Rock Ridge Yard as AP Train WR-5...

Let's watch the trains depart Weehawken...

Next stop - Rock Ridge Freight Yard!!

Don't forget to check out the outbound portion of these trains sent to the A.P.R.R. from Sir John's N.Y.C.T.L. Railroad and PC Ralph's K.P.D. Railroad.

Stop back tomorrow for the continuation of the inbound portion of P.C.C.M. #88 and the arrival of more trains from the N.Y.C.T.L. and K.P.D. to Weehawken and Rock Ridge Yard!!

Enhanced Signal Upgrades to the A.P.R.R.

Greetings followers of the Atlantic Pacific Railroad and my blog.

This is a special blog post as the long awaited signal upgrade is now complete!

This came about during the summer of 2019 as I was running some trains with a couple of the guys. I had added signals on the lower level of staging by Morris Plains to control the crossovers and to have trains come up on either track.

This is the panel by the dispatch area. The signals by Morris Plains are here as well..

Once this was finished, I knew that more signals would be needed to have complete bi-directional trains running from staging to the upper level.

We have to fast forward to 2021 as 2020 was a tough year in our household, Covid not withstanding.

In the spring of 2021, I needed to get more signals for these tracks. In addition, the PRR signals that were currently on the layout are incandescent grain of wheat bulbs, and not LED bulbs. These bulbs do not play well with LED bulbs, so they needed to be replaced.

The big change to the layout was not the signals as much as the panels. I would need to add more rotary switches, which means new panels. I could only put so much on the current panels.

First thing was to find the signals that I wanted. NJ International has supply issues, and I did want to upgrade my PRR signals. While searching online for replacements, I found a company out of Utah called Custom Signal Systems (CSS). He had a nice selection of signals, except he didn't have any PRR signals. So I reached out to Richard who owns CSS and he found some PRR signal heads. The first project was to make me some stand alone PRR signals. I needed 4 of those.

The next step was to replace 4 other PRR signals. However, due to some track issues, I knew that stand alone signals would not work. Richard had make cantilever signal bridges for others, so he made me a pair of PRR Cantilever signal bridges.

Over at Rock Ridge Yard, since we made the tracks bi-directional, we needed to add signals and make a change to the type of signal. There was a PRR stand alone on the main departure track. That had to go and it was decided to make them dwarfs departing the yard. These signals are under the control of the dispatcher since he routes the trains coming into Little Jamaica Interlocking. There was much debate on who would control them, so dispatcher won out. These are 3 color dwarf signals.

The last major change was to add more signals to the tracks leading to and from staging as well as Rock Ridge Yard. I decided that since these are not mainline tracks, 'D Type' signals would be just fine.

At West Harold, I re-positioned the location of the signal coming from the lower level. I moved it closer to the interlocking. Each eastbound track has 2 color dwarfs, so trains can be switched between track 1 ad track 2. Track 1 is the original EB track from staging where as track 2 was the WB track to staging from the yard. Next up was to add signals to both westbound tracks to staging. There was no need for 3 color heads, so we made the WB tracks 2 color. The trains either hold or go, plain and simple.

This is a view of them looking west. Clearances were checked since stack trains are taller than auto racks and Amtrak Superliner cars..

Little Jamaica was upgraded to have the signal bridge closer to the crossover tracks and both tracks
have 3 color signal heads..

Now that signals are installed, new panels had to be made. Back when I made them, I was only able to get rotary switches that had more than 3 positions. In addition, I put these large 'Chicken Head' knobs on them to show direction and position.

The new panel in Little Jamaica has 4 new rotary switches and I went with a smaller, traditional knob and a 3 position rotary switch. These are smaller in size. In addition, since the interlocking signal switches are close together, something had to give. After careful consideration, I removed the control of the switches for CP East and CP South. During an operating session, the Yardmaster controls them. If I'm running solo, and working the yard, the controls are in place by the yard so these were eliminated...

The lettering is much larger and this makes it easier for all to see. We're not getting any younger and I know the eye glass prescription keeps getting stronger every year...UGH!

Here's the West Harold Interlocking showing the same set up. Smaller knobs and larger lettering!

As of this date, I'm having NJ John come over and help me move all the trains that were removed from staging back to the lower level. Here's what has to be moved...

It took us 2 hours to move it up top, and probably about the same, if not longer to put them back!!

The railroad is now ready to have operating sessions with main line tracks running EB and WB and tracks to and from lower level staging to the freight yard on top bi-directional!!

Thanks to everyone who has been patient with me not having gathering and operating sessions. Special thanks to NJ John who helped me move all of these 400+ freight cars and engines all over the place. We're going to resume operating sessions with a few guys to test how the session will work with the new signals next week.
