P.C.C.M. 39L Extra 3007 from Weehawken to Rock Ridge

Hello followers of the P.C.C.M. car movements! As the KP&W wrapped up the The Kings Port Turn, http://kingsportdivision.blogspot.com/2017/09/pccm-39k-kings-port-turn-returns-to.html
the action now turns to the A.P.R.R. with Extra #3007 in Weehawken.

Extra #3007 arrived with lead engine PC #3007 at the helm.

These engines need to be serviced and then head out back to Selkirk and on to West Mill. Since there's a change in motive power (and crew), train WR-1 Weehawken to Rock Ridge will be assigned to the move.

Sitting in Weehawken are a pair of SD45's recently put back into service after arriving from the N.Y.C.T.L. Terminal Yard Engine Facility for testing and maintenance. This was a requirement in order to be put into revenue service. The report is listed here

Subject: Penn Central SD45 locomotives available for lease.

1.     The Penn Central Railroad (PC) is making available for lease a large group of EMD SD45s as they are trying to reduce their roster of 20 cylinder engines.

2.     130 PC SD45s were built by EMD starting in 1966 for the Pennsylvania RR. The Penn Central added another 5 units in August 1968. All are on the active roster.

3.     The SD45 engines are equipped with a 20 cylinder V-20  645E engine that produces 3600 horsepower delivered to the rails via C-C trucks. The SD45 weighs 389,000 lbs produces 97,250 lbs of tractive effort with 82,100 lbs of continuous tractive effort. The units are equipped with 62:15 gearing and can achieve a maximum speed of 71 MPH. The engine is 65’8” long and has a 4,000 gallon fuel tank.

4.     The Chief Mechanical Officer of the New York Central Train Layout has visited various Penn Central Maintenance Bases to identify which units are in the best overall condition for lease by the Atlantic Pacific Railroad.

5.     Our initial findings are that the group of SD45s based at Enola Yard are superior in mechanical and cosmetic condition. All the SD45s inspected at Enola had complete maintenance records, no outstanding mechanical issues and were current on their 30 day inspections. In addition the group of SD45s at Enola all have EMDs upgraded crankshaft installed. Two units SD45 #6184 and 6197 were freshly shopped and painted by the PC placing them in like new condition. Both units were taken into the Terminal Yard Engine Shop where they passed a very thorough inspection. It is these two units, the 6184 and 6197 that the N.Y.C.T.L. highly recommends.

PC 3007 gets cut from the train and heads to Richmond Hill Engine Terminal for service.

PC 6197 comes off its holding track and couples up to the string of cars.

With an 'All Clear' from Rock Ridge dispatch, WR-1 heads out of Weehawken to Rock Ridge.

A short time later, WR-1 hits the interlocking signal at Little Jamaica. Once the tower operator gets confirmation from the Rock Ridge Yardmaster, he'll get the approach signal to the Rock Ridge lead.

As WR-1 gets his approach signal, #6197 will start his slow ascent to the yard. Reduced speed limits are 15MPH for all trains entering and departing Rock Ridge.

Once thru Little Jamaica, he's held at the Rock Ridge Yard lead. Today's train will head into the yard via the south lead track on the west ladder.

A.P.R.R. #301 GP38-2 sits idle on the Morton Salt lead. #301 will be pressed into service once the train is broken down.

A.P.R.R. #110 SW-1 switcher will break down the train and be used for some local switching just outside of Rock Ridge. This train has freight for R.M.O. Electric as well as Cargill. However, due to the loads for R.M.O.,  it will require 2 moves! Do I hear 'overtime' for the crew?

PC #6197 is at the north end of Rock Ridge Yard. The RED signal has the train at a full stop. The engines will be cut and sent to Richmond Hill Engine Terminal for servicing and another assignment.

That's all for now. Next up, local trains for Cargill, R.M.O. Electric, Tropicana, Morton Salt and more!
