P.C.C.M. #93 Part 1 On The A.P.R.R. - Picking Up Freight For Outbound Trains

Welcome everyone to another Penn Central Car Movement! This is a virtual movement of like freight cars between three layouts - Sir John's New York Central Train Layout and PC Ralph's Kings Port Division Railroad as well as my Atlantic Pacific Railroad.

Today we start P.C.C.M. #93 with the gathering of freight cars from various industries in and around Rock Ridge.

On duty in the yard, at the ready are 1:87 Scale Engineers Dan and Matt in a pair of MP15DC engines #106 & #107

In the cab of MP15DC #105 is 1:87 Scale Engineer Mark. 1:87 Scale NJ John is the yardmaster on duty. John will be coordinating the arrival of some locals that will be bringing in freight cars.

Over at West Harold Interlocking, a pair of GP 38-2 engines from the Richmond Hill Engine Terminal await instructions from the tower operator to proceed with their local assignments. AP #307 with 1:87 Scale Engineer Jim will be heading to pick up freight on the east side of Rock Ridge Yard while AP #303 and 1:87 Scale Engineer Kai will pick up loads on the north side of Rock Ridge. Both engineers are seasoned veterans of the APRR, so making the moves will be routine for both...

They await the change at signal at West Harold...

...And the guys have their orders and the signals, so they'll head out...

Let's watch the engines on the move....

AP #307 has arrived at the Little Jamaica Secondary and checks in with the tower operator. Today they'll pull freight cars from Ideal Auto Parts, Marcal Paper and Freihofers Bakeries.

There are 5 box cars over at Ideal. Four 86' box cars headed to the Ford Plant in Bedford Park on the N.Y.C.T.L. loaded with car parts. An empty LV box car will head back to Delco Batteries on the K.P.D.

A lone PC box car sits on the adjacent track from Marcal waiting to be picked up. That will head to Ralph's Grocery on the N.Y.C,T.L.

NYC Covered hopper 892010 will be picked up by the crew and dropped off in the Yard. Another yard crew will move it over to Cargill when the outbound cars are pulled. This is what we call an intra-layout move...

The crew grabs the first set of cars before heading back to Ideal...

...Then over to Ideal Auto Parts...

Let's watch AP #307 in action...

The crew is now working its way to Rock Ridge Yard...

AP 307 working its way thru Little Jamaica Interlocking...

Then on to Rock Ridge Yard....

Back over by C&P Restaurant Supply, AP #303 is getting ready to pick up their freight. There are a total of 10 box cars at C&P. Six reefers in both AP & EB (Empire Belt) livery reefer green will be heading to Pilgrim State Hospital on Long Island. The N.Y.C.T.L. will handle that block of cars. The PC box car will head to Cavendish Foods and the HRC box car will head to Battaglia Bros Warehouse. Both of these industries are on the K.P.D. A pair of non-PCCM reefers will be pulled from C&P and brought over to the yard empty awaiting its next assignment. Before they pull from C&P, they'll pull 5gondolas from Shapeless Steel. A pair of PC gondolas will head to Acme Auto Parts with steel stock. An EB gondola has steel pipe which will head to Hudson Valley Coop; both industries are on the K.P.D. A pair of empty EB gondolas will head back to Gervais on the N.Y.C.T.L...

The moves begin...

Now the crew pulls the cars from C&P Restaurant Supply...

The crew is ready to come off the Little Jamaica Secondary and head to Rock Ridge Yard. They're awaiting some train orders as they will need to drop some cars for Rock Ridge East Yard. That yard wil lbe used to build the outbound train for freight going to the K.P.D....

Meanwhile, AP 307 is in the yard. NJ John is letting the crew know things are going as planned...

AP #105 starts to break down the train and spot them in the yard according to the orders from the N.Y.C.T.L. The yard crew will block the train so the crew at Terminal Yard will be able to work efficiently, just like the Rock Ridge Yard crew...

Looks like a couple of K.P.D. cars are being dropped in the yard. Those will need to go over to Rock Ridge East Yard...

The Bedford Park Block is on departure track "A"...

AP #105 is in position to receive the next set of inbound freight cars...

Over at R.M.O. Electric, AP #100 with 1:87 Scale Engineer JP, his work order will be to pull 3 empty hopper cars from the Power Plant as well as six covered hoppers from Cargill....

AP #100 drops the three empty hopper cars on Rock Ridge Yard limit track 2. They will be picked up by the Rock Ridge East Yard crew. The covered hoppers will go to the main yard...

1:87 Scale JP drops the covered hoppers in yard down the west ladder. Those will be spotted for the LIRR Block for the Terminal Yard crew to handle over in Empire City...

JP heads back to tie down by the power plant...

AP #303 will head back to Rock Ridge yard, but not before he drops some cars near Rock Ridge East Yard for the crew to pick up...

AP 303 heads to Rock Ridge Yard...

Now that some freight cars have been dropped outside Rock Ridge East Yard, the M&E crew, led by 1:87 Scale Steve and his trusty conductor Bob, are ready to pick up the freight for the K.P.D. train. They had picked up 6 empty PS-2 covered hoppers from County Concrete which will go to Tri Mount Cement on the K.P.D.

Steve and Bob make their way to pick up the cars up the line...

First pick up are the 3 empty hopper cars. Two EB hoppers going back to get coal via the LVconnection and the AP car will get coal from Hedberg Aggregates...

The cars are gathered and ready to be dropped in the yard...

And the guys park their engines....

Back over at Rock Ridge Yard, the crews are working on breaking down the inbound cars for the eventual departure to Terminal Yard...

A lone Tropicana reefer for Ralph's Grocery in Empire City needs to be picked up, so JP heads over to grab it...

...And drops it in the yard for the crew to spot...

The moves are quick as the crew has this down pat...

Looks like Mark is getting ready to spot the cars for the LIRR Block...

The Tropicana Car will get added to the Bedford Block once they gather the rest of the cars...

We'll cut it here for today. Tomorrow we'll get the crews working on the rest for the train for Terminal Yard on the N.Y.C.T.L. as well as the cars for the K.P.D.

Remember to check out the outbound P.C.C.M. movements on Sir John's incredible New York Central Train Layout and PC Ralph's awesome Kings Port Division Railroad

Thanks for reading!

The APRR is firing on all cylinders today!!! An impressive amount of car moves made by the APRR crews. They moved a tremendous amount of tonnage this day and looked good doing it! Great job on documenting all these moves along with photos and videos. A fine start to PCCM 93 Outbound Weekend!! Great Job Sir Neal!!!

I really enjoyed the slow running in your videos as those large auto parts cars glided by at switching speed, a testament to well maintained equipment and track! APRR orange and black motive power is showcased in the variety of jobs today. The addition of the interchange with the M&E adds a lot of operational interest and railfan eye candy. I'm a fan of the cement car movements between County Concrete and Tri Mount Cement. Lots of rail action to follow and enjoy in this premier post of the series!
